I have purchased many air purifiers over the last few years, but I never thought too much about the job they do. We always left them running, assuming they were helping us, and not paying much attention to them until we saw the clumps of cat hair in them. The Winix, however, is in a class of it’s own.
My search started when I noticed that after we got home from the hospital, Macy was wheezing and had a stuffy nose. I gave it a few days hoping that it would clear up. I spent time cleaning the litter and dusting around the house with to resolve. During this time, I spent a lot of time and money trying to find the best solution.
We ended up trying the “Ionic Pro Turbo” ($149.99), which is the “totally silent” air purifier first. The problem we ran into with this product was the incredibly loud “buzzing” that was coming from the transformer. The buzzing was quite loud. I was able to hear it in my computer room (over my desktop PC), while it was in the living room over 20ft away (with my door open). It would click on and buzz for 4 seconds, then click off and stay silent for 8 seconds. It would repeat this process indefinitely and I found myself slowly going insane and calling out “On! …1 …2 …3 … Off! … 1…” to my wife throughout the day. We ended up exchanging the (presumably defective) unit and found that the next unit had the same issue! Aside from this, the smell was awful! Our house smelled like burning plastic during it’s use and for some time after.
The next product we tried was the “Honeywell QuietClean” ($127.99) air purifier. I was more hopeful with this model because I had used Honeywell products in the past and was convinced that a fan pushing the air around would work so much better than ionized air. I was right about the air! This thing would move the air like a regular stand-up fan. The problem was that the fan was LOUD and there was an overwhelming plastic smell, which according to the manual would “go away after 24 hours”. So, I left the unit in our guest room running for 24 hours, as the manual had recommended. The next day the smell was even worse than the first (even worse than the Ionic Pro)! Walking into the room would make you dizzy, so I knew this was not the best choice for my baby.
But, rest assured, this story has a happy ending. After hours of research, countless reviews, and some convincing my wife… we finally did it! We bought the most amazing air purifier we have ever owned, the “Winix WAC9500” ($269.99)! I ended up purchasing it directly from amazon because they had the lowest price and free 2-day shipping with my amazon prime account. The day the Winix arrived, I joyfully un-boxed the unit and read through a simple 1 page setup. I removed the packaging from the filter, snapped it into place, and powered the unit on. The instant I powered on the unit and the fan begin to spin up, I was amazed by the noise and power. Despite the unit pushing a large amount of air, there was almost no operation noise on low and medium. In addition to this, the air that was being purified smelled incredible! The smell reminded me of “cold air”. I wish I had a better way to explain it… but it reminded me of a cold morning with fresh crisp air hitting my nostrils. The unit has built in sensors for both dust and odor (which were both red in my house), so I set the unit to automatic mode and let it do what it needed to make our lives better. After just 1 night, our living room, bedroom, and kitchen smelled clean and fresh, and Macy stopped her wheezing and sniffling the following day.
I can honestly say that this product is amazing. It was well worth the price and I recommend it to anyone that is interested in an AMAZING air purifier. If you are going back and forth about the price (like I was), please take it from me… I can breath better knowing that my family is breathing better!
